My reading response 1.
The ideas that was brought to my attention the most was how college was generally perceived by its students. The professor had drawn a conclusion based on the evaluation of how serious college students took their work. I found it interesting that the professor’s ethnographic research allowed her to discover her questions she was asking herself, like why her students were not reading the assigned readings so that they can have good in class discussions ,or why kids did not feel embarrassed when they slept in class. It was interesting to learn that she actually had to become a university freshman herself in order to understand how college was changing more effectively. The insights that this reading offers is the ways college changed within time. While Professor Nathan was doing her ethnographic research, she notes that she discovered how much the university was influenced by other activities on campus besides a student’s actual school work. She also discovers that the way she was previously thinking, as a faculty member, was the wrong way to think about college life. I also found it interesting that the professor explains how out of place she felt when she was on campus. She says she saw the campus in a whole new view and did not realize how many buildings she had to locate. She states that she felt out of her comfort zone and like a true freshman. The issues that are involved in this reading is how she did not realize, as a student, that she had to abide by university rules. There could be a lot of things at stake when these issues arise. For instances, it could jeopardize you chances at continuing your research and could call for legal displinary actions. I agree with the fact that college is an entirely different setting from when other professors were in college. I believe that with all the social gatherings and the new technology we have, it can be distracting from college student’s studies. I do not agree with the stereotype that all college students are this way though. There are a lot of college student who live as if they were in the old age and do not become easily distracted with the many opportunities there are on campus.
